Collection: Tyranids

Destroy and consume, adapt and evolve, all for the sake of the hive mind that leads the Tyranid horde.

The Tyranids are foreign to the Warhammer 40k galaxy, appearing from beyond the galaxy’s borders and sweeping across the outer regions like a storm of destruction. Very little is known about them for sure, but it’s believed they are controlled by some kind of universal hive mind and seek nothing but more and more biological material.

Appearing as giant insects, their weapons are formed from their own bodies, firing acid, bile and other horrific things. They range from massive swarms of smaller creatures to titanic war beasts, each type with its own dedicated battlefield role. They can physically adapt and evolve at incredible speeds, making them tougher and more lethal every time they fight.

In-game, the Tyranids most famously come as a horde of smaller units with a few bigger beasts to provide firepower and toughness. They are capable of both devastating close combat and melee, although lack real vehicles or heavily armoured units compared to others. Keeping units together can often provide crucial bonuses, so positioning is critical!

Getting started with Tyranids

If you’re starting a new hive fleet with Tyranids in Malta, here are some basic beasties you’ll need:

  • Termagants - Some of the smaller creatures in the swarm, Termagants come in large numbers to harass the enemy and take over the battlefield.
  • Tyranid Warriors - Larger, more elite Tyranid forms that can excel in both close-quarters combat or ranged firepower with the toughness to back up either role.
  • Hive Tyrant - A towering monster on the battlefield, the Tyrant is the classic Tyranid war leader who can direct allies and take apart enemies just as easily.
  • Von Ryan’s Leapers - The perfectly evolved ambush beast, Leapers will wait patiently before springing from the shadows and ripping apart even the toughest targets.
